The clock is ticking. Who in your life still needs to register to vote?by Maggie Duncan, League of Women Voters Elections TeamSeptember 18, 2012
![]() While the candidates will be duking it out until the very last vote is cast on the night of November 6th, we, at the League of Women Voters , want to make sure everyone is aware of another important date: your state’s voter registration deadline. Voting is our opportunity to take control and to have a say on the issues that matter most to us. It is how we come together to support our families, each other and our communities. On Election Day, we all have an equal say, but only if we’re registered to vote. This may be the most important election of our lifetime. Our future is on the line: jobs and economic stability, the health of our families, the sustainability of our environment and quality education. Together our votes can influence not only who wins the elections in November but the policies and issues that are addressed in the coming years; together, we can make a real difference. Census data and other analyses tell us that once registered, Americans across all age groups and backgrounds overwhelmingly turn out to vote. Registration is the essential key to making sure everybody gets a chance to participate on Election Day. We’ve worked for more than ninety years to make sure Americans of all backgrounds have the information they need to participate in our democracy and take a stand on the things that matter most to them. It’s what sparked our founding during the women’s suffrage movement of the 1920s , and today it is what inspires our incredible volunteers to visit high schools, community college campuses, naturalization ceremonies, bus stops, baseball games, health clinics, and senior centers nationwide to make sure everyone has the chance to register and get ready to vote. Even if you’re already registered, we bet you can probably think of someone--or better yet, five or ten someones--in your life who may never have registered, or who may have moved since the last election and thus needs to update their registration. In most states, voter registration deadlines are between one month and one week before an election. That means time may be running out soon. Find your state’s deadline, fill out and print a voter registration form, and find a host of other helpful resources with our election resource – www.VOTE411.org . Since 2006, VOTE411.org has provided millions of voters with information about the election process, including information directly from the candidates regarding their vision for America’s future, absentee and early voting options, registration deadlines, ID requirements, and important updates regarding any changes you can expect to see at the polls this year. NCoC, the League of Women Voters, and many other organizations exist solely because they believe everyone deserves an equal say in our democracy. No matter our beliefs, ethnic background, income, or ZIP code, we all count the same on Election Day. Make sure your friends and family can join with their neighbors to decide our future. Encourage them to register or update their registration while there’s still time. It’s easy to get started at www.VOTE411.org . If you’d like to get more involved in voter registration in your community, contact your Local League and find out how you can help.
