What So Proudly We Hail

What Does it Mean to be American?

July 7, 2011

Since the beginning of our Nation, Americans have begged the question, “who are we and how do we identify ourselves as individuals? As citizens we grapple to understand the lofty principles set forth by our founding fathers only to discover that the cultivation of a good citizenry involves the heart as well as the mind. Filled with thought-provoking excerpts about civic life and national identity, “What So Proudly We Hail” is an book that demonstrates the power of story, speech and song in a series of short stories told by American authors.

In this anthology of rich American history, editors Amy A. Kass, Leon R. Kass and Diana Schaub emphasize the importance of education in further developing American identity, character and citizenship. Leon Kass discussed his reason for writing the book saying that the editors wanted to, “help improve civic education and national attachment in America.” He suggested that, “our public life requires citizens who know who they are as Americans.” The nonpartisan writing style of the book also allows readers to draw individual conclusions while promoting eager and active involvement in civic life.

Together, the editors provide a fresh perspective in this book that “proposes different ways of thinking about different aspects of our shared lives as American Citizens (xxiii).” Having taught in high school and college for over a century combined, the editors draw on old ideas of citizenship and identity and present the information in a new, dynamic light. George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, praised the book saying, “The nation with the soul of a church owes a great debt of gratitude to the editors for giving readers a well-guided tour of the many layers of that soul.” The editors offer challenges in creating a unified American identity and emphasize the importance of education in developing a cohesive citizenry.

Beyond the published book, the “What So Proudly We Hail” website strives to be a rich resource for educators, civic and service organizations, youth group leaders, home schoolers, and anyone interested in learning more about what it means to be an American citizen.

Now more than ever American people are searching for answers trying to discover their meaning, purpose and place in civic life. Many Americans lament the declining patriotism in the United States but are doing little to reignite the fire that calls for citizen engagement. This books acts as a guiding tool for those curious about national identity and want to learn more about the American creed.
