As someone who believes in the power of learning through service, I am excited by attempts to give students universal access to service-learning. Mandating service-learning is one way to do this. Mandates, however, are not the only way and--in some cases--not necessarily the best way, to make service a core educational experience for young people, especially when the emphasis is placed on just completing service hours.

As an alternative to mandates, ensuring that service-learning is used as a strategy to teach some of the academic courses every student must take before matriculation or graduation. This is also an effective way to making sure service-learning is part of every student's educational experience while also giving them authentic opportunities to actively use the academic knowledge and skills they learn in the classroom by participating in relevant and critical community problem-solving activities.
