New “Service as a Strategy” Blueprints

August 26, 2011
Earlier this summer, the Service as a Strategy initiative was launched by ServiceNation and Cities of Service. Service as a Strategy is designed to help mayors identify and implement high-impact service strategies that address pressing local challenges in education and youth, health, neighborhood revitalization, disaster preparedness, sustainability, and veteran reintegration. These strategies are developed with the help of experts and turned into actionable "blueprints" that will be implemented in cities across the country with the help of local and national funders.

NCoC supports the initiative and is excited to spread the word about the unveiling of the two latest Service as a Strategy blueprints – Sustainable Home Makeover and Prepared is Protected. These two new blueprints will help mayors make their cities more sustainable and prepare citizens to respond effectively during a crisis.

Sustainable Home Makeover is a high-impact service strategy in which the mayor’s office engages volunteers to help homeowners assess their home’s energy efficiency and perform simple renovations to improve it. These low-cost improvements reduce the energy consumption of individual homes and save residents money while helping to reduce the city's carbon footprint. Download the blueprint.

Prepared is Protected is a high-impact service strategy in which the mayor’s office mobilizes knowledgeable volunteers to bolster the disaster awareness and preparedness of households in their communities. When citizens are aware of what they need to do to prepare for a crisis and take necessary precautions, communities are better equipped to deal with the effects of a natural disaster or emergency. Download the blueprint.

These blueprints are available for download here and at www.ServiceAsAStrategy.org

NCoC joins the Service as a Strategy partners in encouraging you to engage your mayor’s office to support the implementation of these high-impact service strategies or invite them to become a City of Service today.
