News You Can Use: Empowering Voters, One Click at a TimeGuest post by Maggie Duncan, League of Women Voters Elections TeamOctober 26, 2012
Have you heard? Election Day is coming. On November 6, millions of Americans will head to the polls to cast a ballot. We know all about the candidates at the top of the ticket. We know the stakes: this election will have a profound impact on our country’s place in the world, our economic future, our national game plan for tackling tough challenges like healthcare and education, and much more. We know how important each and every vote will be in determining the outcome. The real question is: what do we still need to know? It turns out many Americans, especially many of the young and first-time voters who could determine the outcome of this election, lack basic information about the voting process. How does all of this actually work? When do I vote? Where do I vote? What and who will appear on my ballot? What should I bring with me to the polls? For over 90 years, the League of Women Voters has fought to educate and engage Americans on the issues impacting our communities. The League, NCoC, and many more partner organizations work every day to bring new people into our democracy and make sure it works for all of us. We want everyone to have easy access to the information they need to participate. To that end, we encourage you to check out our newly updated www.VOTE411.org, a handy elections resource which has provided the information voters need most since 2006. VOTE411 has served millions of voters in recent years, and now the site features a personalized voting guide containing up-to-date information on how voting works in your state, ballot measures and candidates you will see on your ballot, where to vote, and important deadlines to remember. The election in November will impact all of us. The stakes are too high to let others decide for us. So, let’s all think of five people we know who could use the helpful information provided on VOTE411. Share our Facebook posts, follow us on Twitter, share our website to help spread the word! Rooted in the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the League of Women Voters has always been committed to educating and turning out voters, and we’re not stopping now. Make sure to join with your neighbors in voting on Election Day, Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Together we control what happens to our families and our communities.
