Panel: BIG Citizenship: Fad or Philosophy?2010 National Conference on CitizenshipSeptember 17, 2010
A lot of attention has been given to citizens organizing themselves to address social issues, advocate for causes, and make their voice heard, but is this a new movement? Women's suffrage movement just celebrated 90 years, the right to petition government is in the first amendment, and we've been talking about corporate social responsibility for the last 50 years.
This begs the question, with all the recent calls for change, is the current surge of citizen-driven engagement a fad, or a philosophical underpinning of our society? The 21st century provides unique opportunities for engaging and addressing social problems, and this panel is a discussion on this model and its implications. Discussion Moderator is Senior PBS NewsHour Correspondent Judy Woodruff. Panelists are: Jonathan Ehrlich, Director of Consumer Marketing of Facebook; Alan Khazei, CEO of Be the Change, Inc.; Anne Roosevelt, Vice President of Global Corporate Citizenship of Boeing Company; Erica Williams, Deputy Director of Progress 2050 at the Center for American Progress.
